Cross-National Study of Palliative Care Patterns and Costs
This project aimed to develop a protocol to describe and compare for the first time the patterns of care, costs and experiences of hospice and palliative care in three major cities: London, Dublin and New York. The objectives of this planning grant, funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies, were:
- To identify key partners, individuals and organisations, for the project
- To review existing literature and data on activity to inform the methods
- To debate and agree the methods of the study
- To prepare a full protocol of the study
- To pilot methods, so that a full application can be made.
All of the outcomes identified in the project have been achieved. In addition, we have exceeded one of our planned outcomes in that we believe we will also be able to publish the work undertaken in the planning grant. The results of this project have led to a full protocol and a draft paper. We aim to get the paper published and would like to find funding for the protocol.
The international collaboration in this project has created a strong working link between the three cities and countries which has been valuable in itself.
