Some ideas of how you can help

Cicely Saunders International relies entirely on charitable donations to undertake its work.   We seek to have a global impact in the field of palliative care and in order to achieve this we need to secure support for the following positions and research projects:

£110,000 will support a Cicely Saunders International Faculty Scholar.  These scholars are exceptional researchers who will be the future leaders and investigators in end of life and palliative care, particularly in the clinical fields.  They work on specific projects and programmes seeking to discover the best cost-effective treatments for ‘neglected symptoms', including breathlessness, fatigue, neuropathic pain and psychological and spiritual support for patients and their caregivers.

£100,000 a year will support one of our three professorships, which are:

  • Cicely Saunders International Chair in Global Palliative Care. One of the major issues affecting palliative care across the world is the ability to assess available services within appropriate cultural and spiritual context. The aim of this post will be to work with palliative care specialists in poor countries to develop high calibre, culturally appropriate palliative care.

  • Cicely Saunders International Chair in Quality of Life Research. This post will research quality-of-life issues and the psychological effects of illnesses, treatments and service upon individuals and their families, an area that has fallen behind other fields of research.
  • Cicely Saunders International Chair in Palliative Economics. Cicely Saunders International is unique in creating a senior post of this kind. This post will research the cost effectiveness of palliative care and the impact of ineffective use of end of life care on patients' well being.

£40,000 will support a Cicely Saunders International PhD Studentship. These students will study key ‘neglected areas' of palliative care such as pain or improved ways to support families and caregivers.

£20,000 a year will support a Cicely Saunders International MSc Scholarship for an international student from a developing country to undertake the MSc in Palliative care.

£10,000 a year would enable a UK student to undertake the MSc in palliative care.

Our priority areas of research are the Breathlessness Programme, Palliative Care for the Elderly and the Qualycare programme.  These are important programmes of work which are starting to make a real difference in the way palliative care is given.
